Design Options
for Edging,
Decorative Rock,
and Mulch
With your new landscape there are lots of design options. I have listed a few categories below with some context to help drive your decisions.
Mulch Options
Mulch is used in landscaping to keep weeds down and hold moisture. Mulch helps to keep soil cool for perennials and all plants. Some perennials tolerate decorative rock, but many only thrive in mulch. Trees and most shrubs love mulch, but rock is ok. With mulch, you can add a new color or type to change the look from year to year. The downside of mulch is it needs to be regularly replenished. In a windy area with few trees, this happens more often than an established neighborhood. Weeds are everyone’s concern in a landscape. We share the view of most professionals that weed barrier/ fabric is not a good idea under mulch. With rock you can choose to install fabric or 6 mil poly under the product. Rock does not break down and become dirt like mulch laid 4 years ago. With mulch, you often add a new layer annually. The old mulch will become dirt. If that dirt is lying on the fabric, the weeds that want to grow will root into the fabric and create a mess. It is best to attack weed growth not with a weed barrier but by keeping weed seeds from germinating. We use Preen. (weed seed germination prevention agent) You can simply apply Preen twice a year then going forward. The few weeds that germinate can be controlled by carefully using a herbicide like Round-up or by pulling them by Hand. There are two different types of mulch. The Cypress and Cedar mulch are the longest-lasting. They are more expensive as they are the product of trees grown far from Minnesota. But they last the longest as they naturally repel water. The 2nd type of Mulch is any dyed product as listed below. This mulch is either made of a tree that fell in a storm locally or an old wood pallet. The wood for this mulch isn’t naturally water repellent and is often pine or hardwood like oak. But it is sourced locally. All mulch fades with exposure to the sun. A quick rake of older mulch to turn it over helps to get a better look.

Decorative Rock Options
The advantages of installing decorative rock in a landscape are significant. It is generally good for 15 years to stay relatively weed-free. This varies with maintenance. If you use a blower regularly to keep your rock beds clean of debris, they will be free of weeds. Over time, a rock bed will need to be removed as it will have become 20% dirt mixed into the rock. A rock bed also has advantages around a house foundation, such as getting water to flow away. We generally advise using rock on the sides and rear of a house in heavy clay soils for just this purpose. Clients often choose Mulch for the front of the house for its curb appeal.
I’d like to highlight one of my suppliers. Hassan Sand & Gravel, a Rogers-based company offers a wide range of decorative rock and mulch. For more pictures and inspiration, visit their website at Hassan Sand & Gravel.

Edging Options
Keeping grass from growing into your landscape beds and conversely the bed from falling out is the reason for edging products. Black plastic edging was once the gold standard. We have evolved. Many homeowners tried using cheap rolls of edging or have had poor quality professional edging installed previously, and as a result this product has a bad name. We still install Valleyview Black Diamond lawn edging. It is the top of the line product. Virgin Plastic. It is shipped and stored flat. (not rolled up), You need to use metal stakes to keep it in place.. We do! Good poly edging like we use is a 15 year solution. Natural stone edging has taken off in the last 20 years. Stone edging, concrete edging or boulders as edging is more durable than plastic. It is more expensive, but lasts longer. It has a nice look. Some people also enjoy steel edging for its durability. These products can be in place for 20 plus years.
